Adams Family


Dr. James Smith Adams was born in Gloustershire c.1817, and his occupation was that of Surgeon. He died of a tumour, aged 69 years, and was buried in the Mornington Cemetery on 14th February, 1887.

James Smith Adams was born 1838, son of Dr. James Smith Adams and Annie Hopkins. He was a butcher by trade with his own slaughter yard, and was heavily involved in the community, including as a Councillor with Mornington Shire Council.

He died with a fractured skull, as a result of accident at Cranbourne, and was buried in the Mornington Cemetery on November 10th, 1895.
He was married to Evelyn Esther Robinson, who died at Geelong in 1915 aged 74 years.

Their children were:

  1. Annie b. 1863. Married Albert Henry Jones 1888. Died in Geelong in 1948, aged 85 years.
  2. Florence Mary b. 1865. Married Albert Irving Edwards 1886. Died at Heidelberg in 1950, aged 86 years
  3. James Smith Adams (the “third”) b. Cranbourne 1866. Married Ann Martin in 1897. Died at Mitcham in 1944, aged 80 years.
  4. Ellen Eva (Nell) b. Cranbourne 1867. Married William Edwin Grover on 13 April, 1890.
  5. Charles Edward b. Cranbourne 1870. Married Abigail Hutchinson (daughter of William Hutchinson and Annie Swift) in 1897. Died in Mornington in 1950, aged 80 years. Their son James Smith Adams (the “fourth”) was born in Mornington in 1902. Charles Edward Adams is mentioned in the Referendum of 1899 as living in Mornington and his occupation was listed as butcher.
  6. Margaret Jane (Madeline) b. 1876 Balnarring. Married Ernest Moors. Died at Armadale in 1958, aged 85 years.
  7. Alice Constance Waugh b. 1879 Flinders.
  8. George Frederick b. 1881 Flinders.
  9. Francis Albert Leonard b. 1885 Schnapper Point. Died in 1867, aged eight years. He is buried in the Mornington Cemetery, also listed as Thomas Albert Leonard.
