Campbell (née Jenkins)

Campbell Clan

Catherine Campbell (neé Jenkins) was born in 1832, in Dunoon, Scotland.

She and her husband, John Campbell, arrived in Australia in January 1857, aboard the ship “Merrie England”.

Travelling with them were Catherine’s parents Adam and Mary Jenkins, her brother John Jenkins, and her sister Margaret.

Catherine and John Campbell had four children – Dougald in 1852, Mary in 1858, Adam in 1859 and Duncan in 1862. All four died early. Dougald died before they left for Australia, Duncan was stillborn, Adam died at 18, and Mary at 22 years of age.

Her husband John sadly, also died at the early age of 40 years.

He was buried at Campbellfield, in 1863.
Catherine followed her family (the Jenkins) from Bulla, to settle in Mornington. Her sister, Margaret McLellan died in childbirth, at the age of 39, leaving seven children under ten years of age.

Catherine helped raise those children, especially the new born, her niece Jessie McLellan.

Catherine was a shopkeeper for many years, until her retirement, and she lived in Empire Street, Mornington, until her death in 1921, aged 89.
